As an emerging way of information dissemination,short video has constructed a new picture of people’s daily life and interaction,and UGC has become a content production and organization mode widely used by short video platforms.As one of the leading platforms in the short video industry,Douyin caters to people’s needs for self-expression and presentation in the 5G era.College students play the dual role of content consumers and producers on Douyin.They have active minds,strong willingness to express themselves,and are willing to accept new things,and with systematic Internet education,they have a higher level of media usage and media literacy than other age groups.Therefore,studying the creative practices of college students on the Douyin platform is more representative and valuable,and can provide a glimpse of the interaction between people and media technology today.As an important group of Douyin users,what are the characteristics of this group’s Douyin use? Do they have any advantages over the average grassroots?What are the implications of their media practices? These are the key points for consideration in this paper.Under the UGC model,there are only a few pop-up college student Douyin numbers,and more ordinary college student creators on Douyin are involved in UGC.Their behavioral performance,psychological state,and awareness of the media in the adoption of media technology deserve attention.The study adopted participant observation,interview and questionnaire methods,and interviewed 14 college student Douyin short video creators based on three predetermined criteria: previous experience in Douyin short video shooting,persistence in content creation,and relatively vertical and curated video content.College students create Douyin short videos based on different motivations,such as non-utilitarian record expression and entertainment to reduce stress,self-identity,traffic realization,and media practice under the guidance of grades,and college students’ Douyin works have distinct campus symbols,focus more on the presentation of self,and the emotional tendency of video content is positive.On the creation path,college students gradually become the force of short video creation,and the discipline and professional background have little influence on the content;the dissemination platform is mainly Douyin and multi-platform;the production method is simple and smooth,and increasingly professional;college students usually update Douyin short videos in fragmented scenes,and the update frequency is influenced by individual implementation costs.Although the students of Henan University are more active in creating Douyin short videos and gradually change to specialization and refinement,the Douyin number is still at a relatively low-dimensional level,and their Douyin practice is polarized: some students enjoy themselves in Douyin short video practice and keep accumulating followers,while some find it difficult to continue and finally give up operation and maintenance.From the perspective of human-medium technology interaction,there is a mutual domestication between college students and Douyin.By analyzing the common characteristics of the popular college students’ Douyin numbers,we can provide reference for ordinary college students’ Douyin creators under UGC mode.Compared with other creator groups,college students have more free time,less survival pressure and more room for growth,and seem to deserve to be a public with high media literacy.But from the reality level,grassroots groups can also become excellent short video creators,and intellectual elites are not able to become the trendsetters of the video era.Humanity is about to enter the era of symbiosis with machines,which requires a large number of new human beings who are skilled in using the media without being captured by the increasingly powerful intelligent technology,and the video creation of college students is undoubtedly an excellent perspective for us to observe the deep interaction between human and media in the new era.Compared with professional self-publishers,college students’ Douyin short video creation has the characteristics of part-time,content limitation and lack of financial technical support,etc.For the problems faced by college students’ creators,they can be optimized from three aspects: platform,individuals and universities.Multiple measures should be taken to guide college students to understand the media correctly and play an active role in the era of mediaization.
