With the development of the times and the progress of science and technology, screen reading has become an inevitable trend of the times.Previous studies have shown that adults’ metacomprehension monitoring accuracy is low when they are reading on screen, and have a “screen inferiority”.Contemporary children have been exposed to electronic products at an early age,and they read on screen more frequently, which makes their reading habits and media preferences quite different from adults.Only a few studies have examined the effect of reading media on the absolute accuracy of metacomprehension monitoring in children and the results are inconsistent. In addition, existing studies do not consider the impact of text genre. Therefore, this study mainly explores whether children have screen inferiority in reading performance and metacomprehension monitoring accuracy when reading expository texts. If screen inferiority exists,is this screen inferiority adjusted for text genre, and is the trend of this adjustment influenced by age? Based on this,we designed three experiments:A total of 60 fifth grade participated in the experiment 1,using a 2(reading media:paper reading, screen reading)× 2(text genre: narrative,expository)cross-factorial design,to explore the influence of reading media and text genre on children’s reading performance and the absolute accuracy. The results showed that, the main effect of reading media was significant, paper reading was significantly better than screen reading; The main effect of text genre was significant, narrative was better than expository; The interaction between them was not significant. In experiment 2,80 fifth graders participated in a 2(reading media: paper reading, screen reading)× 2(text genre: narrative,expository)in-subject design to explore the effects of reading media and text genres on children’s reading performance and metacomprehension monitoring accuracy. The results showed that in terms of reading performance, the results of reading media and text genre were the same as experiment 1,but the interaction was significant. That is,there was no significant difference between paper reading and screen reading under narrative condition;Paper reading was better than screen reading under expositive condition. In terms of absolute accuracy, the main effect of reading media was significant; The main effect of text genre was not significant; The interaction between them was significant, and the result of interaction was the same as reading performance. In terms of relative accuracy: the results of reading media and text genre were the same as the absolute accuracy. But the interaction between them was not significant. There are 120 participants respectively from grade 3,grade 5 and grade 10 in experiment 3,using a 2(reading media: paper reading, screen reading)×2(text genre:narrative,expository)×3(grades: grade 3,grade 5,grade 10)cross-factorial design to explore the development trend of screen inferiority in expository reading at different ages. The results showed that in terms of reading performance: the results of reading media and text style were the same as experiment 1.The main effect of grade was significant, grade 3 was significantly lower than grade 5 and 10,there was no significant difference between grade 5 and 10.The interaction between text genre and grade was significant. That is,there was no significant difference among three grades under narrative condition;Grade 3 was lower than that of grade 5 and 10,but there was no significant difference between grade 5 and 10 under expositive condition. The interaction between reading media and text genre was significant, and the result was the same as experiment 2.The interaction between reading media and grade was not significant. The interaction among reading media, text genre and grade was not significant. In terms of absolute accuracy: the results of reading media and text genre were the same as experiment 1.The main effect of grade was significant, the results was the same as reading performance. The interaction between reading media and text genre was significant, and the result was the same as experiment 2.The interaction between reading media and grade, text genre and grade was not significant; The interaction among three was not significant. At last,in terms of relative accuracy, only the main effect of reading media was significant, the main effect and interaction of other variables were not significant. The results of this study indicated that the growth of age promotes the improvement of children’s reading comprehension and metacomprehension monitoring ability. However, the interaction between reading media and text genre on individual reading comprehension and metacomprehension monitoring accuracy exists for a long time. That is,the screen inferiority of expository text does not diminish with age.
