| English reading plays a vital role in senior high school English learning.Good reading ability can not only improve students’ performance to a certain extent but also benefit all aspects of life.Nowadays,in the traditional senior high school English reading class,teachers who dominate the class usually pour the knowledge,while students have to passively participate.Due to the lack of enthusiasm for learning,students’ interest in reading is not so high that their reading performance is less satisfactory.It is urgent to provide teachers with new ideas in English reading classes and change the current situation of English reading in senior high school English classes.Unlike the traditional reading teaching mode,in the “Reading Circle” teaching,the roles of teachers and students have significantly been reversed.Students are the central and active participants in reading activities,while teachers are the “promoters”.Students are no longer separated from the group,and they do not need to study alone but do group cooperative learning by taking part in the “Reading Circle” learning group.Although the foreign research on “Reading Circle” has become mature,the domestic research and application,especially in senior high school English reading,is not very extensive and still needs effort.This thesis explores the effectiveness of the “Reading Circle” teaching model in senior high school English reading classrooms by conducting “Reading Circle” group activities inside and outside the classroom through reading texts outside the classroom.The following three research questions are posed in order to meet the above research goal:(1)What influence does the application of “Reading Circle” in high school English reading teaching have on students’ interest in English reading?(2)What influence does the application of “Reading Circle” in high school English reading teaching have on students’ cooperative learning ability in English reading?(3)What influence does the application of “Reading Circle” in high school English reading teaching have on students’ English reading performance?This study which is based on Harvey’s “Reading Circle” theory,constructivist learning theory,autonomous learning theory,and cooperative learning theory,chose 90 students(There are 45 students in the experimental class and 45 students in the control class)from grade one of Haicheng Ximu Senior High School to do experiments and investigations.Before and after the application of “Reading Circle”,the pre-test and post-test of the questionnaire survey are conducted on the students in the experimental class to measure the impact of “Reading Circle” on English reading interest,and in order to measure the impact of “Reading Circle” on cooperative ability,the author selected 5 students in the experimental class to do the interview.At the same time,measure the pre-test and post-test of the reading performance of the students in the experimental class and the control class to measure the impact of “Reading Circle” on reading performance.After the experiment,SPSS 26.0 statistical software is used to analyze the results of the pre-test and post-test reading tests of the experimental class and the control class,collect and compare the data of the questionnaires before and after the experimental class,and examine the findings of the interviews conducted with 5 students from the experimental class,so as to get the corresponding conclusion.The results show that: 1)The application of “Reading Circle” model in senior high school English reading teaching can significantly stimulate students’ interest in English reading,making them think that English reading is important,more interested in English reading,more enthusiastic about learning English reading,more willing to do English reading questions,and no longer feel reading monotonous and boring.2)The application of the“Reading Circle” model in senior high school English reading teaching is helpful to improve students’ cooperative learning ability.In the “Reading Circle” group,everyone has a clear division of labor and carries out cooperative learning in an orderly manner to enhance the communication between members and develop students’ cooperative learning ability.3)The application of the “Reading Circle” model in senior high school English reading teaching helps to improve students’ reading performance obviously.We can intuitively see that students’ reading performance has been significantly improved through the pre-test and post-test papers.Finally,this study illustrates the enlightenment for senior high school English teaching in the future: teachers and students should pay attention to changing the traditional roles in the past,carefully select the materials for cooperative learning in the “Reading Circle” group,and pay more attention to the participation of students and supervise them at the same time.If allowed,teachers should think about more ways to promote students’ participation in group activities as well as make further efforts to apply the “Reading Circle” learning model to writing. |
