As a hot issue in current academic circles, the theory of national integration has been continuously deepened.Nation-states that have gained independence since World War II have to face the problem of national integration as long as there are many nationalities and ethnic groups in the country. The relationship between Singapore and Malaysia is the focus of contemporary international relations in Southeast Asia.In history,Singapore was once a part of Johor Kingdom in Malaya, and all aspects of society and economy are closely related. In 1945,"Singapore and Malaysia" as a whole realized the peaceful transformation from a colony to an independent country, and completed the initial construction of state institutions and democratic systems. In particular, both countries share the same characteristics of multi-ethnic,multi-religious and multi-cultural.The merger of Singapore and Malaysia is beneficial to both sides, but the realization and consolidation of nation-state integration depend on many factors. On the contrary, the obstacles and failures of nation-state integration also depend on many common influences. In history, the historical hidden danger of "divide and rule" caused by British colonial rule and Japanese occupation rule, ethnic relations, colonial authorities’ policies, economic interests and other factors hindered the integration process between Singapore and Malaysia, and finally the national integration failed. The most basic goal of national integration is national unity. Why does the separation of Singapore and Malaysia lead to the paradox of "national integration" ?Starting from the history of the merger between Singapore and Malaysia, this paper makes a concrete analysis of the history of the national construction and the failure of the merger between Singapore and Malaysia from 1963 to 1965 as an inseparable whole process, and reveals the complicated relationship between party politics and nationalities in the merger between Singapore and Malaysia. The political integration and its failure during this research period have certain enlightenment significance for other multi-ethnic countries. In particular, the merger of Singapore and Malaysia is a typical case involving political, ethnic, religious and domestic and international conflicts of interests.A systematic study of it is of great significance for analyzing and understanding the relationship between Singapore and Malaysia, the political and economic structure of Southeast Asia and the integration of multi-ethnic countries.
