Discourse Construction Of Chinese Digital Feminism

The 50 th Statistical Report on the Development of China’s Internet released in June 2022 showed that as of that time,the number of internet users in China had reached 1.051 billion,with a net increase of 19.19 million users since December 2021,and the Internet penetration rate had reached 74.4%.The arrival of the Web 2.0 era and the rapid popularization of the internet also means that feminist discourse on internet platforms has a wider development space,and the characteristics of the internet also mean that users who do not self-identify as "feminists" can actively participate in discussions on gender issues or online feminist discourse.In recent years,there has been a lot of discussion on various gender issues on internet platforms,and the attention paid by internet users to feminism has also increased.At the same time,users who actively speak out on gender issues or self-identify as feminists are active on various social media apps.This article focuses on various gender-related texts in the Douban App,aiming to analyze the main content,characteristics,functions,and generation mechanisms of Chinese digital feminism discourse.The article is divided into six sections.The introduction provides background information and reviews existing research both domestically and internationally.The second section clarifies relevant concepts and introduces the research background.The third section employs text analysis,combined with interviews and specific cases,to demonstrate the representation of Chinese digital feminism discourse.Building upon the research materials from the second section,the fourth section explores the main features and functions of Chinese digital feminism discourse.The fifth section examines the mechanisms behind the generation of Chinese digital feminism discourse by incorporating relevant theories.Finally,the sixth section discusses future prospects for the development of Chinese digital feminism.Research has found that discussions on Chinese digital feminism cover a wide range of topics,encompassing both consensus and conflicts.These discussions are emotionally charged and incorporate expressions of feminist theories.The functions of Chinese digital feminism discourse include arousing women’s consciousness,deconstructing traditional gender discourse,and influencing the social agenda.The generation mechanism of Chinese digital feminist discourse involves expanding the public sphere through self-expression,linking individuals in the public sphere to foster identity formation.Once identity is established,collective empowerment leads to collective action,thereby shaping the discourse of digital feminism.To further promote positive development,Chinese digital feminism should advance theories of women’s liberation,enhance proactive engagement in women’s political participation,and foster an open and inclusive gender culture to facilitate the healthy development of Chinese feminism.
