This study investigates how external military intervention has affected Yemen’s stability, specifically analyzing its impact on the political, economic, and social aspects of the country.Yemen, situated in the Arabian Peninsula, has been grappling with several obstacles such as internal disputes, economic hardship, and political unsteadiness.Over the years, various entities, including the United States,Saudi Arabia, and Iran, have intervened militarily in Yemen, leading to a more intricate scenario and significant implications for the Yemeni community. The study initiates with a concise chronicle of Yemen, along with the elements that have led to its current state.Subsequently,it analyzes diverse categories of foreign military involvement, such as aerial bombings, naval obstructions, and ground maneuvers, and their influence on Yemen’s stability. The document asserts that foreign military intervention has aggravated Yemen’s political, economic, and social stability and has played a significant role in the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the country. The ramifications of external military intervention in Yemen have been catastrophic, impacting the country on several fronts.Politically, such intervention has dealt a severe blow to Yemen’s sovereignty and legitimacy. The interference of foreign military forces has weakened Yemen’s central government, rendering it ineffective in managing the affairs of the country. This has resulted in a power vacuum that has been ruthlessly exploited by different armed groups vying for control, leaving the country in a state of fragmentation and chaos.Economically, the intervention in Yemen has had a devastating impact on the country’s economy, exacerbating its already precarious situation. The disruption to the agriculture and fishing industries has caused significant damage, resulting in a severe shortage of essential commodities like food, fuel, and medicine. The combination of a collapsing economy and the blockade of essential imports has led to a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, leaving the population unable to access basic necessities.Prices have skyrocketed due to the shortage of goods, making it impossible for many families to afford even the most basic of supplies. As a result,Yemenis are forced to make impossible choices every day between buying food, medicine,or fuel.On the social front, external military intervention in Yemen has caused a lot of damage to the country’s social fabric, making tribal and sectarian divisions even worse than they were before.Leading to heightened levels of conflict and animosity. As a result of this intervention, millions of Yemeni people have been displaced from their homes, leaving behind everything they knew and loved. They have been forced to seek refuge in neighboring countries. The displacement has disproportionately affected vulnerable groups like women, children, and the elderly, who are often left without support or protection.Overall, the intervention has had catastrophic consequences, tearing apart families, communities, and Yemeni society. In essence, the research paper claims that external military intervention has had a significant negative impact on Yemen’s stability, which has ultimately contributed to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The paper stresses the importance of a political resolution to the conflict, and urges the international community to extend support and aid to the Yemeni population.Additionally, this research serves as a valuable contribution to the literature on Yemen, drawing attention to the pressing need for additional exploration of the impact of external military intervention on vulnerable states such as Yemen.Generally, this thesis is comprised of five chapters,Chapter One covers the introduction section, which provides an overview of the background of the study, including the political and socioeconomic context of Yemen and the ongoing conflict that has been raging since 2015.The research questions are also presented, aiming to explore the consequences of external military intervention on Yemen’s stability. The main argument of the thesis is presented, which suggests that external military intervention has had a negative impact on the stability of Yemen. The significance of the study is discussed, with theoretical and practical implications. The methodology section describes the research design and methods used to investigate the research questions. The literature review section explores existing research on the topic, including motivations for external intervention, external military intervention in Yemen, and the concept of state sovereignty. The intended academic breakthrough is discussed, highlighting the unique contribution of the thesis to the current understanding of the impact of external military intervention on Yemen’s stability. The theoretical framework section presents the theoretical perspectives that inform the thesis, including Neorealism. Finally, the structure of the thesis is outlined, including the chapters that follow and the key themes and arguments that will be explored in each section. The second chapter presents an outline of the causes of the Yemeni crisis. This chapter addresses the reasons for the crisis, which include the political, economic, and social aspects that have led to the ongoing conflict. It also covers the opposing parties involved in the issue, including regional and international entities and local political groups. The chapter emphasizes the significance of comprehending the local political situation in Yemen and the roles of the conflicting factions. It investigates the Houthi movement, which has played a significant role in the crisis, together with other local political groups that have contributed to the war.The chapter also examines the regional and international players involved in the Yemen conflict. It addresses the roles of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which have led military involvement in Yemen since 2015,and Iran, which has been accused of aiding the Houthi rebels. This chapter examines the influence of external military involvement on Yemen’s and the region’s stability. Finally, the chapter explores why Yemen matters to the Middle East.It discusses the strategic importance of Yemen’s location and its proximity to key shipping lanes,as well as its potential to destabilize the region.Overall,Chapter 2 provides a comprehensive overview of the Yemen crisis and the various parties involved in the conflict. This understanding is essential to evaluating the impact of external military intervention on Yemen’s stability, which is the focus of the following chapters.Chapter three of the dissertation examines the economic and social impacts of external military intervention on Yemen’s stability. The chapter delves into the considerable economic costs of military intervention and its harmful effects on the private sector, resulting in a decline in investment and business opportunities and a contracting economy.Additionally, the chapter explores the social repercussions of the conflict, such as the displacement and migration of civilians, leading to increased poverty and unemployment rates in Yemen. Moreover, the conflict has caused a decline in health conditions, with many Yemenis lacking basic necessities, including food, water, and medical care.Similarly, the education sector has suffered gravely with inadequate resources, teachers, and facilities, leading to a reduction in educational opportunities.Overall,Chapter 3 provides an extensive analysis of the extensive and destructive effects of external military intervention in Yemen. The chapter highlights the critical need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and policies that tackle the Yemeni people’s immediate needs.Policymakers and academics will find this chapter beneficial in comprehending the economic and social implications of military intervention in Yemen and developing effective solutions to restore stability to the country.Chapter Four examines how the military intervention has severely impacted Yemen’s political stability, causing the country to fracture along political and geographical lines. The chapter focuses on four major effects of military intervention, including the violation of national sovereignty, the collapse of political institutions, the rise of extremist group activity, and political fragmentation.Increased extremist group activity, such as that of Al Qaeda and ISIS,has also been a key result of the fighting. These organizations have used Yemen’s instability to establish a presence in the nation and launch assaults against both civilian and military targets. Moreover,Yemen’s political division has contributed significantly to the country’s instability. The internationally recognized government of Yemen, the Houthi Movement, the Southern Transitional Council, and the Joint Forces are competing for power. The Houthi Movement controls a significant portion of northern Yemen, while the Southern Transitional Council has declared autonomy in the south.Yemen’s internationally recognized government is headquartered in Aden, although it has struggled to maintain control of the country. This intervention has led to significant civilian casualties and further destabilized the country.Overall, the chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of military intervention on Yemen’s political stability, highlighting the urgent need for a lasting solution to the crisis in Yemen.Chapter five, the final one of this thesis, aims to examine the effect of external military involvement on the state of stability in Yemen and reach a conclusion on the basis of the analysis that was offered in the earlier parts. The role of external military involvement in Yemen and its influence on the stability of the nation have been investigated throughout this study. The conclusion highlights that external military action has had a substantial influence on Yemen’s stability and that this intervention has,for the most part, had a negative impact on Yemen’s stability. The involvement has made pre-existing conflicts worse and sparked new ones, which has resulted in an increase in violent crime, population displacement, and the number of people in need of humanitarian aid.It has also weakened Yemen’s institutions, which were already in a precarious state, making it more difficult for the country to address the root causes of its issues and construct a lasting peace.
