Since the 20 th century, capitalism has continuously expanded, developed, and expanded through its occupation of space, and successfully transferred contradictions and crises.Space has become an essential element of capital accumulation.Entering the 21 st century, the importance of space in today’s society is more apparent.Marx Engels’ theory of space has profound connotations and far-reaching implications. The issue of space runs through the entire Marxist theoretical system and has greatly inspired Western space theorists.Marx and Engels’ space theory has opened up a new path to solving social and practical problems.Marx and Engels’ space theory was not created out of thin air,but had a certain theoretical origin. From Epicurus’ simple materialistic space thought to modern Hegel’s objective idealistic space thought,to Kant’s transcendental space view,it had a certain impact on Marx and Engels’ space theory. In the new historical context,Marx and Engels critically inherited the space thought of their predecessors, and timely proposed their own space theory. From "Doctoral Thesis" to "Communist Manifesto" to "Capital",and finally to "On the Housing Problem",Marx and Engels have continuously explored and enriched their own spatial theory, and their spatial thinking has continuously moved from infancy to maturity.Based on the standpoint of historical materialism,Marx and Engels placed the issue of space under the specific historical conditions of capitalist society. From the perspective of the transformation of primitive society, slave society, feudal society, and capitalist society,it is revealed that space plays different roles in different stages of the historical development of human society. In capitalist society, spatial capitalization is an inevitable trend of spatial development in capitalist society.Space deprivation, spatial production, spatial agglomeration of labor and means of production, conversion of land rent into capital, shortage of workers’ housing, and differentiation of urban residential space are important manifestations of spatial capitalization.Marx and Engels’ space theory criticizes the social oppression, colonial space,urban-rural separation, and opposition resulting from the capitalization of capitalist social space, which ultimately leads to the alienation of urban space.Marx and Engels’ spatial theory is not only an alternative interpretation of the traditional Marxist genealogy, but also a special response to the trend of the times. It is also an important driving force for solving spatial alienation and deprivation, and promoting spatial justice.Marx and Engels’ spatial thought has important theoretical and practical value for the rational control and utilization of capital in current China and the exploration of the future pattern of China’s spatial development.
