In the new era,the transformation of Marxism into a contemporary,Chinese, and popularized form requires the creation of a lively and vivid image of Marx.During the May Fourth period,Marxism was widely introduced to China, and early intellectuals introduced Marx’s philosophical and academic background, his ideas of historical materialism, and his criticism of Hegel,Proudhon, and Feuerbach, which contributed to the construction of an image of Marx as a solid and critical philosopher. The introduction of Marxist political economy also helped to shape Marx’s image as the pioneer of socialist economics. The presentation of Marx’s theory of class struggle and revolutionary movement contributed to his image as a revolutionary.A comprehensive introduction to Marx’s life also created an enriched personality image of someone who lived a wandering life but was devoted to the revolutionary cause, persevered through hardships, committed to public welfare, and diligent in scholarship.Based on the unique historical conditions and requirements of the time, the construction of Marx’s multiple images by the Chinese intellectual community during the May Fourth period ultimately served and served the image of the revolutionary,as materialist historical theory, surplus value theory, and class struggle theory all aimed to critique capitalism and explain the necessity and legitimacy of proletarian revolution, with clear value orientations. At the beginning of the awakening of the national consciousness during the May Fourth period,Marxism was too difficult for the vast majority of workers and peasants to understand and be interested in.However,Marx,as a living person who devoted his entire life to fighting for the underprivileged, persevered through poverty, and possessed a social ideal of "worldwide harmony",was deeply consistent with China’s mainstream values derived from traditional culture.Marx’s image as both a"scholar" in the "study" and a "warrior" on the "battlefield" epitomized the ideals of May Fourth intellectuals.Driven by various factors,Marx,as a "Westerner",was quickly accepted by advanced Chinese intellectuals and people. The Chinese people’s good first impression of Marx became the beginning of the Sinicization of Marxism, laying the ideological foundation and psychological preparation for the popularization of Marxism.
