Mao Zedong’s works are a summary of texts written by Mao Zedong, who is the great and outstanding thinker, statesman, revolutionary, and military man,the founding leader of New China, during all periods of the Chinese revolution and construction, and are an important vehicle and centralized presentation of Mao Zedong’s thought and the experience of the Chinese revolution and construction.Since the 1920s,multilingual Mao’s works have been disseminated to overseas countries, read and accepted by local readers, and have had a profound impact on foreign academic research, political movements and social thinking, among many other things.Mao’s works have a long history of dissemination in German-speaking regions, especially Federal Republic of Germany and Democratic Republic of Germany, where articles such as "On the People’s Democratic Dictatorship," "Against Liberalism," and "The Question of Independence in the United Front" were translated into German for publication soon after the founding of China. In the 1960s and 1970s,the dissemination of Mao’s works in Germany reached a climax, which was closely related to the anti-colonial,international communist and national liberation movements that emerged worldwide at that time.In Germany in the 1960s,influenced by the French "May 68" the Federal Republic of Germany also saw the emergence of a large-scale student movement,in which many intellectuals claimed to be "Maoist"and used Mao Zedong Thought as the guiding ideology for their movement."Maoism"as the guiding ideology of their movements. At the same time,a series of left-wing "Maoist" political parties sprang up in the Federal Republic of Germany, including the well-known "K-Gruppen"(Kommunistische Gruppen),which took Mao Zedong Thought as its political platform and guide for action. These parties took Mao Zedong Thought as their political program and guide for action, following the example of the "Cultural Revolution" in China, and carried out actions to learn from China in the ideological and political circles of Germany at that time, and further internalized Mao Zedong Thought into revolutionary theories and political ideas with German characteristics, openly opposing the rule of the German bourgeoisie and seeking "The third way" different from capitalism and Soviet socialism. From this viewpoint,Mao Zedong’s thought had a great influence in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s,and this influence was to some extent due to the dissemination of Mao’s works in Germany represented by the Selected Works of Mao Zedong and the Quotations from Mao Zedong. Therefore, this paper will review the dissemination of Mao’s works in Germany in the 50s to 70s of last century from the perspective of international communication history and make a detailed and three-dimensional presentation of the timeline, circulation and influence of the dissemination of Mao’s works in Germany by means of historical analysis and documentary research. In the first chapter of this article,we will review the existing studies on the international dissemination of Mao’s works and introduce the research design and proposal of the study.Chapter 3 of the article will analyze and define the dissemination effect of Mao’s works in the German literary and artistic circles, political circles, academic circles and the general public from several aspects, such as the reading and acceptance by the general public, the use and propaganda by German political parties, and the attention and quotation by German scholars;Chapter 4 of the article will analyze and define the foreign propaganda strategy of the Chinese revolution,Sino-German diplomatic relations, the world national liberation movement and socialist revolution, and the "The third way" of Germany. In the fourth chapter, the historical background and reasons for the popularity of Mao’s works and Mao’s thought in Germany will be restored and explained from the perspectives of Chinese revolutionary outreach strategy,Sino-German diplomatic relations, the world national liberation movement and socialist revolutionary trend, and the political tendency of "The third way" in Germany. Finally, the article combines the historical experience of the dissemination of Mao’s works in Germany with the current international communication in China, and distills and summarizes the implications and suggestions of this historical case of international communication for the current transformation of the international communication paradigm in China, the construction of the concept of the community of human destiny, and the international communication strategy of political books and mainstream values.
