Abstract/Summary:
Terry Eagleton,as one of the representative figures of British Marxism,is a well-known contemporary Marxist theorist, literary theorist and cultural critic who enjoys a reputation in several fields.Since the millennium, his theories have been innovating and narrating quite fruitful, and his philosophical ideas have attracted wide attention from scholars at home and abroad.Eagleton published his new work Hope Without Optimism in 2015,in which he develops a critique of optimism based on capitalist society, centering on the idea that hope is born out of tragedy, and a critique of the spirit of capitalist culture. In Eagleton’s view, true hope is tragic and is born out of tragedy.Eagleton’s theory of hope analyzes the meaning of hope,as well as the words desire and faith, which are easily confused with hope. And against the banality of current optimism and the control of optimism by capitalist ideology,Eagleton launched an in-depth critique of optimism, thus rejecting the position of rational optimists.Eagleton’s theory of hope explains to the world an understanding of the nature of hope, giving us not only a new perspective to critique capitalist society, but also a unique interpretation of Marxist theory.
