China now has the world’s largest elderly population and the highest rate of population ageing in the developing world, with issues such as the elderly population, the rate of increase in the number of elderly people and the rate of increase in the number of empty nesters coming to the fore. The ageing of China’s population has now entered a period of rapid development. At the end of 2020,there will be approximately264.02 million people aged no less than 60,representing 18.70% of the total number of people in the country(of which,13.50% are aged no less than 65,with a population of190.64 million). For this reason, our country is very concerned about the now growing problem of an ageing population.According to statistical data, most of the current forms of support for the elderly in China are family support, but with the decrease in the number of families in China,as well as the increasing pace of life and the gradual increase in pressure from work, the traditional forms of elderly care are gradually being affected. Therefore, from the perspective of the elderly, family ageing has a positive impact on both the physical and mental health development of the elderly. In terms of China’s current support for old age, more support is directed at community and socialised care, while relatively little attention is paid to family care, but it still cannot shake the status of family care as the foundation of old age.Based on China’s national context, this paper uses methods such as literature and comprehensive analysis to analyse the fact that in the context of China’s increasing ageing, older people are very anxious to have adequate support from all sectors of society for family retirement.Strengthening support for family care plays an important role in addressing the shortage of resources for the elderly.Based on the relevant literature that has been collated, this paper finds that an elderly care model with the following characteristics has gradually formed in China’s cities: firstly, family elderly care is the most basic part;secondly, community services provide security for elderly care;thirdly, institutional elderly care plays a supplementary role, the basic meaning of which is to give full play to the basic functions of family elderly care in order to meet the basic needs of the majority of elderly people to age at home. The main research objective of this paper is to study the situation of family ageing in urban areas.Analysis of the current situation of support for family ageing in China reveals that although China has made efforts to do a good job of maintaining and enhancing the function of family ageing from different angles by further adjusting and improving various initiatives,it can be found that not only is there a lack of support for family ageing in China in terms of laws and policies, but it also faces problems such as homogenisation of measures, lack of policy operability and strength, imperfect social security forces and lack of behavioural guidance from the government to the elderly as well as family members, which have become obstacles to the development of family ageing. In response to the problems that arise in urban family ageing, some suggestions are made: firstly,to improve the relevant legal provisions and policies on supporting family ageing,to protect the rights and interests of family ageing, and to attach importance to publicity and guidance work;secondly,to strengthen the cultural construction that supports family ageing,so that children can care for and accompany their parents from the bottom of their hearts;thirdly,to target support for family carers, including financial, employment and support for various elderly services;and The fourth is to promote ageing-friendly construction,so that the elderly can live in a comfortable city. The ultimate aim is to make the elderly’s wish to age at home come true and to age at home in a more qualitative way. |
