In February 13th 2019,the Hong Kong SAR government proposed to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance,which was opposed by Hong Kong’s business and legal circles.This proposal subsequently triggered a serious social opposition movements broke out in Hong Kong.Under the collusion of local and external forces,the movements turned into riots.This turmoil was not only one of the most watched news events in China,but also has attracted the attention of the world.Regarding this social disturbance in Hong Kong,the media of Russia and the United States both paid great attention and showed different reporting tendencies.Based on the framework theory,this paper selects one US media and one Russian media:CNN and Russia Today TV(abbreviated as“RT”),taking the reports on the English websites of the two media as the research object,using Zang Guoren(scholar from Taiwan,China)’s view of division of high,medium and low on the theoretical framework,will study the different characteristics of what Russian media and American media presented in the report of violent protests in Hong Kong’s anti-amendment legislation and what are the reasons for the difference.This paper summarizes the different reporting tendencies of the Russian and American media,compares and analyzes the reasons for the formation of the framework in terms of editing strategies,values,national interests,and international relations.This paper also found that RT has the characteristics of strong agenda setting in terms of reporting methods and reporting styles,distinctive reporting styles,and implementation of the“localization”development strategy.Combining these characteristics,this paper discusses how to improve the standard of the Chinese media’s international news reporting and avoid possible risks at the same time from four aspects:raise awareness of proactive agenda setting,explore the international reporting style with Chinese characteristics,increase the acceptance of the target audience,improve the professionalism of international news reporting,hoping to provide some references for the China’s international communication. |
