Research On American Intervention In Taiwan’s General Election

Taiwan’s quadrennial "general election" is a major event in Taiwan’s politics.The results directly affect the development of cross-strait relations and the stability of Taiwan Strait.Considering its own interests,the U.S.pays close attention to the electoral process,expecting the results support the strategic objectives of itself.Taiwan has always been closely related to the U.S.,and it confronts the mainland with the help of American military and economic assistance.Most people in Taiwan also regard the U.S.as a protector,they identify with the American values and have a pro-American tendency.Therefore,the United States can pretend not to interfere in Taiwan’s democratic elections,but in fact to interfere in the electoral process by means of explicit or implicit pluralism,affecting the election results.For example,to express their support or suspicion by receiving candidates from Taiwan,to make statements and positions by important non-political figures,to transmit signals by pro-Taiwan policies,to express support by military means,to influence the election by opinions and views of the scholars and public media,etc.The prosperity and stability of the Taiwan Strait is an important factor for peace and development in the Asia-Pacific and the world.Although the American Government has expressed its attitude that it will not support Taiwan’s independence,it has taken practical actions to help Taiwan confront the mainland even intervene in Taiwan’s elections.The intervention of the United States is an important reason for the tension in the Taiwan Strait and the deadlock in cross-strait relations.While disturbing Taiwan’s political situation,it has also seriously affected the sound development of China-U.S.relations.The Taiwan question is the core interest of China.It is the people’s will to solve the problem by peaceful reunification.On the basis of the 1992 Consensus,we should work on the institutional consultation between the two sides,promote economic relations,encourage the cultural communication,and enhance the recognition of the people,especially young people,to the mainland.The key to resolving the Taiwan question also lies in further cooperation between China and the U.S.we should deepening strategic mutual trust and building a new type of relations between China and the United States as major powers.
