| This report is on the basis of the translation practice of A Description of the Chinese Junk KEYING to study the Chinese translation of long sentences from the perspective of Theory of Linguistic Adaptation. This book is a maritime historical documentary text with a wide diversity of long and complex sentences, which brings difficulty in translation.English long sentences are divided into three categories in this thesis: simple long sentences, complex long sentences, and compound and complex long sentences. After reviewing the translation strategies and methods proposed by scholars in translating long sentences, the author summarizes specific translation methods based on the translation practice text — synchronizing, cutting, embedding, and recasting. In the process of translation, the author applies Theory of Linguistic Adaptation to guide the translation of long sentences, and explores how to reproduce the original text in three aspects: adaptation to the context, adaptation to the language structure, and achieving dynamic adaptation. The conclusions of this translation practice report are as follows: The simple long sentence has a simple structure which contains only one independent clause so synchronizing and cutting are mostly applied. The complex long sentence contains one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses.Embedding and cutting are mostly used to deal with the translation of the complex long sentence. The compound-complex long sentence, which has the most complex structure, contains two independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause. The translation methods of this sentence structure are flexible and various. The author mainly adopts synchronizing and recasting. |
