C-e Simultaneous Interpreting For Expressions Of Chinese Parallel Structure

Chinese parallel structure is an important literary technique that has wide application in speeches to enrich the discourse and strengthen the speaker’s tone.However,it is not easy to handle these structures in Simultaneous Interpretation（SI）tasks.The author was inspired by the four translation coping strategies of Chinese parallel structure,namely Retaining（保留）,Conversion（替换）,Adjustment（调整）and Replacement（舍弃）,and thus intended to find out whether these strategies apply to the SI tasks.The author chose the five Press Conferences of the 20^th CPC National Congress as the research material and collected interpretation recordings from professional interpreters on the spot and an MTI student doing SI simulation.There are altogether103 expressions of Chinese parallel structures collected and transcribed from the recording.Based on Han（2017）’s three criteria for interpreters’performance evaluation,the author assessed the professional and student interpreters’performance in handling parallel structures and analyzed the influence of using the coping strategies on interpreters’performance.Then,primarily based on the professional interpreters’choices of coping strategies,the author generalized the appropriate coping strategies for Chinese parallel structure and specified the timing and conditions of applying each strategy.This thesis proves that the translation coping strategies can also apply to SI tasks and they have a great influence on interpreters’output quality.The study also provides a valuable and pragmatic reference for MTI students to sharpen their interpreting skills and helps them to better tackle Chinese parallel structures of all kinds.
