Traditional Chinese festivals are an important symbol of the historical and cultural accumulation of the Chinese nation in national life.They are gradually receiving increasing attention in the international community and playing an important role in the overseas communication of Chinese culture.Based on the attitude system of James Martin’s Appraisal Theory,this paper makes a quantitative and qualitative study of the festival cultural contents in China Daily,The New York Times and The Washington Post,as well as Chinese teaching materials,Integrated Chinese,Boya Chinese,Developing Chinese(Comprehensive Course),HSK Standard Course,Road to Success and Easy Steps to Chinese.It is found that in terms of the Spring Festival topics and the presentation of cultural elements,Chinese reports are more comprehensive,focusing on regional and diversity.American newspapers focus on controversial topics such as China’s push for marriage,racial discrimination in the Spring Festival Gala,and policies on COVID-19.According to the statistics of attitude system and case analysis,the negative attitude words in American reports are relatively high,so as to show the outdated and insensitive side of China.Chinese reports mainly build a good image of China with a positive attitude and propaganda orientation,but China’s external media also lose their voice to a certain extent in the face of biased reports from American media.These differences are mainly related to the position of China and the United States and the media,the cultural values of China and the United States,and the cultural concepts of China.Based on this,Chinese media can improve their communication strategies by grasping the initiative of public opinion,brightening the attitude of open cooperation and strengthening the participation of multiple media in external reporting.Through the analysis and summary of the 6 teaching materials,it is found that they pay attention to The Times in the cultural content arrangement,but the systematization and interestingness need to be strengthened.Therefore,in the compilation of international Chinese teaching materials,we can pay more attention to the systematization,pertinence,interestingness and cultural contrast of festival cultural content.In teaching,we should strengthen the extension and use multimedia to strengthen the cultural scene experience.
