| During the Late Qing Dynasty,people from all walks of life realized the ills brought about by the poverty and weakness of the country and its people,and a group of intellectuals in the Late Qing Dynasty strongly advocated military education and martialism.Lin Shu,with the desire to translate to save the country,promoted martialsim in the translation of novels to stimulate the national enthusiasm for saving the country.Currently,scholars at home and abroad have conducted lots of researches on Lin’s translated novels,but few of them focus on the martialism in Lin’s translated novels.In view of this,this thesis takes the rise of martial trend as the starting point and examines the masculinity in translated novels and military education in the late Qing Dynasty.The study finds that the promotion of masculinity in translated novels and the development of military education have been both conducive to the cultivation of national martialism.This thesis takes Lin’s translation of Haggard’s novel People of the Mist as an object of study to explore Lin Shu’s understanding and presentation of the martialism,and to clarify how Lin Shu presented martialism through character reproduction,plot rewriting,and other translation techniques and strategies.It is found that in the translation,Lin Shu highlighted the courageous spirit of each character and praised their adventurous spirit through additional translations,while showing the chivalrous spirit of the main characters and the thievery of the antagonists.In addition,Lin Shu has also expressed his concern for the peril of the country and advocated martialism through the subtext of the translation.In terms of translation techniques,Lin Shu has added,deleted,and rewrote the plots to highlight the courageous behavior of the main character and his followers in the face of hardships and dangers.By rewriting the characters’ appearance,dialogue,and behavior,Lin Shu has portrayed the characters in the book as strong,courageous,and martial.In his translations of novels,Lin Shu has hoped to use the spiritual power of Western culture to enlighten people’s wisdom,invigorate the national spirit,and awaken the will of the nation to save the country and preserve its species.Against the backdrop of the perilous state of the Late Qing Dynasty,Lin Shu’s translations of foreign literature has opened a new door for the people,trying to make the nation aware of advanced Western culture and knowledge,while at the same time stimulating the nation’s enthusiasm for martialism. |
