Guoyu is an important ancient book of the pre Qin period,mainly recording historical events of the Spring and Autumn Period.This book,which is almost existed as the "Six Classics " in the Tang Dynasty,was well known by scholars due to the need for imperial examinations.Liu Zongyuan is one of the literary masters who deeply influenced by Guoyu.There is no systematic study of "Liu Zongyuan’s acceptance of the Guoyu in academic circles,only scattered in the Guoyu and Liu Zongyuan’s specialized research.This article attempts to comprehensively and systematically explore the specific manifestations and internal motivations of the influence of Guoyu on Liu Zongyuan from the perspective of reception science,through text analysis,text comparison,table statistics,and other methods,and give an objective evaluation of Liu Zongyuan’ acceptance.The introduction examines the existing research results from two aspects of Liu Zongyuan’s ideological acceptance and literature acceptance.In the aspect of ideological acceptance,philosophical thought has been studied deeply and reached a certain consensus,while political thought and Confucian thought have received less attention.Studies on literary reception mostly focus on the reception of "interest" and artistic features,and only focus on the analysis and comparison of writing techniques and artistic features presented by the text,with little exploration of internal motivations.These two studies are also mixed with the evaluation of Liu Zongyuan’s reception of Guoyu.Only in part of the chapters of the study of Guoyu,it confirms Liu Zongyuan’s status as "the first person to discover the literary value of Guoyu" in the reception history,but it does not investigate him in the context of the reception history of Guoyu.The first chapter explores the background conditions for the Liu Zongyuan’s acceptance of Guoyu.The rise of the revival of Confucianism in the Middle Tang Dynasty promoted the shift in Confucian education and the need for stylistic reform.Deeply influenced by this thought,Liu Zongyuan gradually formed a Confucian philosophy of being practical and skeptical of the ancient and distinguishing between falsehood,and joined the " Ancient Prose Movement " of reforming the style of writing,holding high the banner of " Transcending On ‘Tao’ In Literary Creation".The connection with the school of the new "Spring and Autumn Annals" led to the idea of " Auxiliary time and substance" in the acceptance of Confucian classics and the value orientation of daring to question the ancient.The establishment of lofty political ideals under the influence of family circumstances,and the innovative spirit in personal temperament all worked together in the Liu Zongyuan’s acceptance process of Guoyu,which led him to write a series of chapters in the Non theory of Guoyu series that were more shocking at that time.The second chapter discusses Liu Zongyuan’s ideological acceptance of Guoyu.In Non theory of Guoyu and other relevant chapters,the core of Liu Zongyuan’s ideological acceptance is the "Zhong Dao Thought",which includes five aspects: the way of monarchy and ministers,the people-oriented thought,moral cultivation,the thought of etiquette and music,and the image of saints.In addition,the " gentle outside and tough inside " and "contingency thinking" presented in articles that are less relevant to the acceptance of Guoyu are also important components of the Zhongdao thought.The important manifestation of ideological acceptance is a strongly oppose ghosts and gods ideology.Liu Zongyuan adheres to the materialistic world view of " Heaven and man do not anticipate each other " and refutes the ghosts and gods recorded in the Guoyu.Due to his later experience of relegation,Liu Zongyuan’s ideological acceptance of Guoyu also underwent an important transformation,revealing his belief in ghosts and gods,which was a way for him to seek spiritual relief under the plight of being relegated.The third chapter of the article analyzes the concept of Liu Zongyuan’s literary acceptance embodied of Guoyu.In chapters such as Non theory of Guoyu,Liu Zongyuan displays a distinct "writing outlook that values enlightenment,seeks truth,and upholds reality","literary and moral outlook",and "literary interest outlook."."The writing concept of emphasizing enlightenment and seeking truth and reality" is actually the expression of his concept of "writing based on behavior,and being honest first" under the acceptance of Guoyu,presenting a writing purpose of emphasizing enlightenment and a writing attitude of seeking truth and reality.Under the reception background of Guoyu,the literary and Taoist view of " Transcending On ‘Tao’ In Literary Creation " manifests itself in the recognition of the primacy of Dao and the secondary nature of literature.Liu Zongyuan absorbed and integrated the artistic fiction and imagination,as well as the humor and vividness of language,presented in the artistic features of Guoyu into his literary creation.On the basis of inheriting the theoretical interests of Guoyu,he developed the “interest”of Guoyu in combination with the Buddhist philosophical interests of Zen.The fourth chapter of the thesis examines the quotations from Guoyu allusions or historical events in Liu Zongyuan’s writings.Through literature analysis and comparison,this paper summarizes and classifies the content of Liu’s quotations from Guoyu,which can be roughly divided into four categories: historical events,etiquette,language codes,and commentary.These quotations play different roles in Liu’s ideological expression;Formally,Liu Zongyuan’s quotations in Guoyu can be divided into three types: direct quotation,indirect quotation,and commentary quotation,reflecting his familiarity with the text of Guoyu;At the same time,these quotations also exhibit characteristics such as universality,conciseness,and emotional directionality.Finally,based on the overall overview of the Liu Zongyuan’s acceptance of Guoyu,the paper attempts to objectively evaluate and analyze it.On the one hand,this acceptance was one-sided due to its departure from the specific background of the pre Qin period;On the other hand,this one-sidedness and the "purposiveness" of the previous text are both external and internal.Compared to previous studies on the Confucian classics and historiography of Guoyu,Liu noticed the literariness of the text,which is unique.Taking a comprehensive view of the text of Guoyu and Liu’s articles,both of them have shown a spirit of salvation that echoes the times and is " Auxiliary time and substance ",which is a spiritual fit objectively presented in the Liu’s acceptance of Guoyu. |
