| Detective fiction translation can promote the spread of excellent detective novels in China, meet the needs of readers and market demand, and promote the development of detective literature in China. Most of the domestic and foreign research on the translation of detective novels focuses on the social significance and literary function of detective fiction translation.Howerver, relatively little attention is paid to the translation of foregrounding language in detective fictions. Therefore, based on the foregrounding theory, this report focuses on the translation of foregrounding language in detective novels. The translator hopes that while restoring the plot of the detective novel, the translation can also achieve the purpose of foregrounding the original author, such as creating suspense, shaping the image of the characters, and promoting the development of the plot.Foregrounding theory has been used to explore the translation of poetry, biography, and magic novels. However, there is relatively little research on detective fiction translation from the perspective of foregrounding theory. However, due to the textual characteristics of detective stories, the authors often choose to use language deviating from the norm, namely, the foregrounding language,to achieve a special literary effect.Foregrounding theory provides a clear and easy classification of the foregrounding language used by the author, which helps the translator to identify the special expressions in the original text.At the same time, the foregrounding theory pays attention to the literary nature of the works and the author’s writing intention, while the detective novel has outstanding literary nature, twists and turns, and distinct characters. After analyzing the original text, this report finds that the text has a distinctive literary quality, which is embodied in its rich foregrounding language. The author is good at using lexical deviation, graphological deviation, and grammatical deviation in qualitative foregrounding to attract readers’ attention;at the same time, the author also uses quantitative foregrounding, including parallelism and repetition,to create situations and show the psychological state of characters.Guided by foregrounding theory, this report deals with qualitative and quantitative foregrounding in texts. For the lexical deviation of the original text, the translator uses imitation, and liberal translation, combined with conversion techniques to restore the hints and clues given to the reader by the author. For the graphological deviation, the translator uses recreation and liberal translation to try to balance the author’s writing intention and the reader’s experience. For grammatical deviation, the translator uses division and addition techniques to retain the special grammatical structure of the original text. When translating parallelism and repetition, the translator chooses the method of liberal translation, which restores the situation created by the author and the psychological state of the characters while keeping the format of the translation neat.Based on the foregrounding theory, this report analyzes the main types of foregrounding language in detective novels and explores feasible translation methods. The main purpose of this report is to reflect on the literariness of the work and show the author’s writing intention,to provide new ideas for the translation research of detective novels in the future. |
