Abstract/Summary:
Shen Zengzhi concentrated on calligraphy in his later years,but he was able to rise to fame in a few years.Sha Menghai once commented: "(Shen Zengzhi)later somehow,like a Buddhist monk,’once the mysteries of calligraphy are completely understood’." This phrase seems to be an interpretation of this phenomenon,but it seems to be covered with a more mysterious veil.After the study,the author found that this "sudden breakthrough" may be explained as a sudden change in the style of calligraphy.This sudden change is reflected in the fact that the late calligraphy,compared with the early calligraphy,jumped out of the limitation of small characters and began to focus on large characters.The large characters calligraphy,especially the cursive script,can best reflect its artistic style.Secondly,from the "elegant and profound" literati calligraphy style to the "strange and beautiful" artist style,the unique style of "raw,clumsy and unstable" became the typical feature of his late large-character cursive calligraphy,with which the calligraphy style was unique in the late Qing and early Republic of China.Therefore,the selection of Shen Zengzhi’s late large calligraphy and cursive calligraphy as the research content is not only the author’s interest,but also representative and of certain research value.Shen Zengzhi attaches great importance to techniques,especially "potential".Shen Zengzhi is very interested in the creation of "potential" in his calligraphy practice."Shi" is an aesthetic feeling that must be attached to the visible "shape".Therefore,the author tries to explore the source of Shen Zengzhi’s technique from the source of Shen Zengzhi’s calligraphy thought from the three angles of pen use,structure and composition,and thus puts forward Shen Zengzhi’s triple view of technique: the pen use view of "not holding one house,not holding one method",the character combination view of "different forms and the same trend,ancient and modern mixed forms",and the composition view of "containing instability and integrity".Then,through his later calligraphic works in large characters and cursive style,combined with his calligraphic thoughts,this paper analyzes Shen Zengzhi’s unique wisdom and wisdom in the "potential" of calligraphy,which is embodied in three aspects: Shen’s "adverse" posture,the "unstable" posture change from the obvious to the hidden,and the reappearance of the "gentleman in the world" momentum.It should be noted that Shen Zengzhi’s calligraphy has not been given enough attention for a long time in the history of modern calligraphy because of his late status as a survivor and his conservative politics.However,after analysis,the author found that it was the helplessness of his status as an old man and the psychological impact caused by the failure of restoration that became an important driving force for his late calligraphy creation practice and calligraphy style reform,and also an important basis for understanding the profound connotation of his late calligraphy.
