With the impact of the new wave of Japanese films,a number of directors with very personal styles began to emerge in the Japanese film industry.Hirokazu Koreeda,a rising star,is the most representative of this group of directors.Koreeda inherited the essence of traditional Japanese family films, focusing on the complex changes in contemporary Japanese family relations and the delicate emotions in modern people’s hearts, and formed his own unique film style by using documentary style shooting techniques and non-dramatic narrative mode in his films. This thesis takes Hirokazu Koreeda and his film works as the research object, focuses on the visual metaphor techniques in the film as the starting point, analyzes the different effects of different visual metaphor techniques in the film, and discusses the visual metaphor techniques used in the film. This thesis summarizes the operating forms of visual metaphor in Hirokazu Koreeda’s films, and analyzes how visual metaphor plays a role in narrative, enriching character images and revealing themes. On this basis, combined with the creation of the graduation work "Bluer Than the Sky",and draws on the application of visual metaphor in Hirokazu Koreeda’s films. From theory to practice, this thesis explores the application of visual metaphor in movies from the perspective of creators in a more profound and practical way.
