A Report On Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Of The High-Level Interview Session Of The 7^th Nishan Forum On World Civilizations From The Perspective Of The Schema Theory

Since the Reform and Opening Up,China has been engaging in cross-cultural communication with many different civilizations around the world to promote mutual understanding and trust.In the new era,building a shared future for mankind and facilitating cross-cultural communication also requires promoting mutual learning among different civilizations.In 2019,COVID-19 posed as a huge challenge to humanity.At times like this,communication was needed more than ever,and not just for cross-cultural communication,but also to gather intellect and save lives.The 7^thNishan Forum on World Civilizations was a chance to make it all happen.This mock interpretation report is written under the guidance of the Schema theory,using the High-Level Interview session of the 7^th Nishan Forum on Civilizations as an interpretation task.The author hopes to explore how an interpreter translates cultural information in a mock conference setting.This report covers the pre-task,in-task and post task findings of the study,and it ends with a conclusion about these findings.After a brief review of the major definitions of the Schema theory,the author goes on to explain and discuss how the interpreter handled the interpretation under the cultural schema theory.In the case study,the interpreter categories the phenomenon of cultural schema matching into four types,namely the equivalence,conflict,cross-matching and absence of cultural schema.For cases demonstrating cultural schema equivalence and cross-matching,the interpreter adopted more of a Domestication strategy in order to communicate effectively.As for cases of cultural schema conflict and absence,the interpreter used more of an integrated approach,combining different translation strategies like addition and omission to covey the original meaning.Through this report,the author gains a more propound view of world culture and sees how culture has evolved and developed through the years.The author also realizes that translating Chinese cultural material is more than just dealing with classic idioms and social norms.The Chinese culture that have emerged and developed in the new era too,should be treated as a subject for interpretation research.Additionally,the author hopes that this report can contribute to future studies on cross-cultural communication,and help the promotion of“mutual learning among civilizations”.
