The Relationship Between Face Recognition Ability And Holistic Processing Ability

Faces convey a person’s identity information,and the ability to recognize faces is very important in daily life.People often recognize faces quickly and efficiently,but there are huge differences in the ability of different people to recognize faces,which has also attracted the attention of researchers.They believe that people can quickly recognize faces with similar structures and similar features because they adopt holistic processing to face holes,which plays an important role in face recognition.Researchers have also conducted more discussions on the relationship between the two.Although most studies have explored the relationship between face recognition ability and holistic processing,the results are inconsistent.At present,it is still unclear whether the difference in face recognition ability is related to holistic processing.Therefore,this study intends to study the individual differences of face recognition ability and holistic processing ability,and explore the relationship between them.The results show that:(1)There is no significant correlation between face recognition ability and general holistic graphics processing ability,which verifies the specificity of face recognition.(2)Part Whole Effect is positively correlated with face recognition ability,Part Whole Effect can significantly predict the ability of face recognition,and the correlation between Composite Face Effect and face recognition ability is not significant.(3)The holistic processing ability of face has a limited impact on the face recognition ability.In the Part-Whole paradigm,it is found that individuals with better face recognition ability not only show strong holistic processing of face hole information,but also show strong feature processing of face hole information.In conclusion,this study found that the ability of face recognition has a certain relationship with the holistic processing of face,but it is not stable,and face recognition has specificity;Individuals with good face recognition ability may have strong holistic face processing and face feature processing abilities.The effective measurement of holistic face processing and its specific mechanism need to be further explored.In addition,the holistic face processing is not the only key factor of face recognition ability.In the future,the individual’s face recognition ability can be comprehensively evaluated,cultivated and intervened from multiple perspectives.
