Abstract/Summary:
This report identifies itself as a study on E-C translation of an excerpt from Journalism and Climate Crisis, which enquires into what approaches to journalism can enable humanity to productively address the climate crisis.Frame Theory,as an important field in cognitive linguistics, gives the translator’s process of translation a reasonable interpretation.Since the 1980 s,it has been applied to studies on translation of metaphors, cultural images and humorous discourses, but rarely to non-literary translation studies. The study, based on the Frame Theory, tends to discuss how the translator conducts frame operations in ideal and non-ideal cases in academic translation to achieve a correspondence of frames between ST and TT,exploring techniques of academic translation. It is found that cultural difference in frames between ST and TT triggers the translator’s frame operations and informs choices about frame operation methods.Furthermore,in ideal cases, frame connection can be adopted in academic translation, while in non-ideal cases, methods including frame component addition or omission, frame component substitution, frame level adjustment, frame transplantation and frame substitution can be adopted. Finally, methods in non-ideal cases are respectively shown as addition or omission, synonym substitution, superordinate or hyponym substitution,foreignization-addition and domestication-paraphrase in terms of linguistic form. This report not only enriches translation studies from the perspective of Frame Theory, but also proves the feasibility of applying this theory to academic translation.
