Based on the English translation practice of the text Principles and Technology of Food Protein Base Processing(Chapter V),this translation report objectively and explicitly describes translation task, preparation, implementation, case analysis and conclusion of the translation practice. The source text,as a technical one, mainly introduces what the nanotechnology is and its application on food packaging. The terms “semantic translation” and “communicative translation” are elaborated by Peter Newmark in his book Approaches to Translation.Semantic translation aims to capture the precise contextual meaning of the original as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language permit.Communicative translation is intended to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the source text. The theories are often applied in one text,i.e.,one text must be translated communicatively and others semantically.Based on the analysis of the textual characteristics of the source text, the author selects Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation as the guiding theory to explore the practice of Chinese-English translation of scientific and technical texts on food. The report analyzes and summarizes typical and challenging instances of this translation practice, including technical terms, category words, long and complicated sentences, and active sentences.Guided by semantic translation theory, the translator translates the technical terms accurately through contextual analysis and corpus searching, and translates the active sentences by using linear translation moderately.Based on communicative translation theory,a variety of translation techniques, including division, conversion as well as the change of word order are employed in the translation of long and complicated sentences. In the translation of active sentences, the techniques such as changing the voice and the subject are used to obtain an easy-to-read,fluent,natural and idiomatic transcript. This translation report can help readers to know more about the application of nanotechnology in the field of food packaging, and the author also expects that nanotechnology can make other considerable progress. At the same time, the report serves as an example which Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation give a guidance to the translation of technical texts. Moreover,it summarizes translation techniques applicable to such texts, and also provides reference for the study of Chinese-English translation of food science and technology texts.
