Abstract/Summary:
The translation materials used for this project are from the academic text Social Movements Against Wind Power in Canada and Germany(Excerpt)published by Routledge in 2020.It mainly introduces the renewable energy policies and the development of wind power in Canada and Germany. This part has rigorous and objective language, and a great amount of abstract nouns.Abstract nouns have rich connotations, which has become the focus and difficulty of translation. From the perspective of translation equivalence theory, the author uses literature analysis method and case analysis method to sum up four translation strategies applicable to abstract nouns. This study has four findings.First, the abstract nouns derived from verbs and the abstract nouns with verb meaning can be translated into verbs by category conversion.Secondly, using category words such as quality abstract nouns derived from adjectives can concretize abstract nouns.Thirdly, for vague and general abstract nouns, explanatory words can be used to explain them, which is helpful to express the real meaning of abstract nouns. Finally, for the abstract nouns that do not have a complete corresponding in Chinese, figurative word can be used to modify them,so that the abstract concepts can have a more specific image in Chinese.Under the guidance of translation equivalence theory, using the above four methods can improve the quality of translation and make the original translation free from formal equivalence and achieve textual equivalence.By studying the translation methods of English abstract nouns from the perspective of translation equivalence theory,we can broaden the translation ideas of abstract nouns and provide references for future research.
