| The Czech painter Franti(?)ek Kupka(1871-1957),one of the first pioneers of abstract art to produce purely abstract paintings,is credited with inventing "Orphism" and the art of the future. He was also one of the first abstract painters in the history of art.He occupies an important position in this field.Kupka underwent many changes during the changing years of art genres, but he always refused to be labeled as any genre.Kupka’s illustrations began to take on abstract symbols at the end of the nineteenth century, and he was influenced by symbolism and ornamentalism, his work is full of geometric shapes, his mature abstract paintings appeared almost simultaneously with Kandinsky’s in 1910,his work faded from view after the 1920 s,and it took another fifty years before he was again noticed by critics.Although Kupka’s work has not been as influential in art history as Kandinsky’s or Mondrian’s,the rigorous structure and internal logic of his paintings make his work an important part of abstract art.In his study of the associations evoked by visual impressions,Kupka bridges the gap between visual art and music, stating that "music is also a noteworthy stimulus for colorists." He scrutinizes the complexity of sound and visual impressions. In this demanding and essentially metaphorical contemplation, music eventually became an artistic mode,Kupka’s ideal form of abstraction. This paper will provide a systematic analytical study of musicality in Kupka’s abstract paintings.Through an in-depth study of Kupka’s exploration of abstract painting,it will provide a clearer understanding of the development of his personal artistic creation,as well as his rich experience in theory and practice, and sort out his creative trajectory from multiple perspectives,so as to better understand the musicality embedded in his abstract painting works. |
