Abstract/Summary:
This study focuses on the image of disease in Apichatpong’s films,and explores the metaphor and application behind the image of disease.This study mainly takes the film "Memory" as the research object,combs and analyzes the diseases appearing in other films of Apichatpong as well.It ponders over Apichatpong’s highly realistic sci-fi performance,excavates the historical truth hidden under the static scene,and experiences his life perception deeply influenced by religion.Three chapters are main included in this study.Chapter 1 analyzes the personal experience of Apichatpong to understand why he has a special preference for disease,and applies various disease images throughout all his film creations.And compare historical and cultural background between Thailand’s and Colombia’s to analyze why he chose Colombia as the filming site for "Memory".Chapter 2 arranges and analyzes the image of disease in Apichatpong’s feature film,starting with his first feature film "The Phantom of Noon",to explain how he extends the disease of individual characters to society and history,liken individuals or diseases to ghosts and recalls them to the present to break the limitations of time and space.It used as a metaphor for the social and historical diseases that have been wandering in time and space,creating a perfect blend between historical and political expressions in images.Chapter 3 specifically analyzes the film structure,audio-visual language,camera scheduling,and other film techniques presented by Apichatpong in "Memory",and analyzes how he integrated the main character Jessica’s illness into the film seeing and hearing,making the hallucinations knocking sound become the main driving force for promoting the development of the plot.By comparing Tsai Ming-liang and Herzog,it explains how Apichatpong extraordinary use of disease image,as well as his unique understanding and expression of image authenticity.
