Lodovico Dolce was a man of letters active in Venice in the 16 th century. He created, compiled and translated a large number of works throughout his life, covering a wide range of fields and playing an important role in the spread of classical culture in Venice in the 16 th century. At the same time, his works are of great significance to the study of Renaissance art and culture.L’Aretino, one of Dolce’s most important works,is often seen as a response to Vasari’s Lives of the Most Excellent Painters,Sculptors, and Architects.Dolce’s emotional value of color against Vasari’s emphasis on reason and science in “Disegno” became the core of the struggle between Italian art styles in the North and South. And the debate between “Disegno”and “Colorito” has also become the epitome of the depute of this North-South style, which has been repeated in the debate on style issues in later generations.Taking Dolce as the research object, this article will introduce the content and structure of L’Aretino, try to analyze the classical tradition that Aretino continues, and focus on an important debate in art history triggered by this book — the debate between North and South or between “Disegno” and “Colorito” in Italian painting art,and explore its significance and influence.
