The linear structure in painting is both an expression of the object and a unique formal language. The use of lines in artworks not only depicts the objects, constructs the space, and decorates the aesthetics, but also conveys the artist’s spiritual world and inner expression. The arrangement, combination and use of lines in a picture are important ways of constructing the picture.Among them, the "line" with the sense of form, which supports the picture and builds the picture,is also the linear structure. This intrinsic structure is a key support point in the artwork, implicit within the picture, but conveying the most important and more connotative information. As a representative figure of figurative expression painting,Giacometti’s works have a kind of "solitude beyond nature",and his painting language has unique and timeless characteristics, among which the linear structure in Giacometti’s paintings is extremely personal. This paper will analyze the presentation of linear structure in Giacometti’s paintings from the following aspects: the concepts and differences of line, linearity and linear structure;the characteristics of Giacometti’s linear structure;the expression of Giacometti’s linear structure;and the comparison of Giacometti’s linear structure with that of Francesca and Mondrian’s paintings. This paper attempts to analyze the different historical backgrounds, aesthetic orientations, and commonalities and differences in the composition of the picture by comparing the characteristics of Giacometti’s linear structure and its expression with those of different artists’ works. The linear structure in Giacometti’s paintings is analyzed and elaborated on the basis of relevant images,so as to study the presentation and meaning of line in painting.
