“Love and death” is an eternal theme in painting, which is also the choice of Vienna artists in the late 19 th and early 20 th century.I will discuss the interpretation of the theme of “Love and death” by Gustav Klimt,Egon Schiele and Oscar Kokoschka, three representative artists of the Vienna Secession, from the perspective of painting.Combined with the historical background of the three artists’ works and their personal experiences, this paper explores how the decline of dynasties, the start of wars, the development of social sciences, the change of philosophical thoughts and the artists’ personal emotional experiences affect the styles of their works to different degrees. This paper will focus on the symbolism of the picture, expression techniques and artistic propositions and other aspects to analyze the deeper meaning and metaphor in his works of art.Through the juxtaposition of the paintings of the three artists of the Vienna School of Separation, this paper explores the transformation of their artistic styles and demonstrates the transition from symbol to expression in artistic expression.Tracing how the theme of “love and death” runs through their artistic creation, how their artistic ideas expand and enrich the expression form of this theme, and expound their allegorical expression of the intertwine of death and lust.In addition, this paper compares them with contemporary artists such as Edvard Munch and Marc Chagall in similar but different contexts, analyzes how the artists of the Vienna School of Separation express the eternal proposition of “love and death”,and sorts out the relationship between love, sex and death in the contemporary context. To sum up how “love and death”,as the theme of contemporary art, affects my artistic creation, and further explore the possibilities of love and death for art in the future. |
