Since the beginning of the 21 st century,contemporary Chinese figure painters have been trying to combine figure painting with various forms of concepts and genres to enrich existing painting skills.Among various genres,surrealist painting has the closest relationship with contemporary figure painting,as both pursue the liberation of personality and the bursting of ideas.When we review traditional Chinese figure paintings,a large number of ancient paintings depicting the themes of gods and ghosts and exquisite brushwork also reveal the desire of the ancients to release their imagination and inner emotions,which is very similar to surrealist painting.But specifically,there are differences in the expression methods of the two.Traditional figure paintings incorporate the unique mysticism and romanticism elements of Chinese regional culture in their performance,and display a more localized absurdity and poetic flavor.Therefore,it is necessary to explore the surreal phenomena in traditional Chinese figure painting and the influencing factors behind these phenomena,which is helpful for us to deepen the knowledge system of figure painting and innovate the skills of figure painting.At the same time,this exploration process needs to be carried out through specific paintings.This article selects the Picture of The Ode of the River Goddess as the research object.The Picture of The Ode of the River Goddess depicts the love story between Goddess Luo River and Cao Zhi,with a large number of mythological elements and a strong romantic atmosphere.The whole picture exhibits a strong sense of surreal beauty.At the same time,the Picture of The Ode of the River Goddess is also a classic work of early exploration of traditional figure painting,and selecting this work as the research object has certain representativeness.In terms of specific process,this article explores its surreal characteristics from five aspects: dream-like effects,composition and layout,brush and color,imagination and generalization,and emotional expression,and further explores the influential factors behind these characteristics,namely,Chinese original mysticism and romanticism.Finally,by summarizing the research process,the significance of the surreal phenomenon in traditional Chinese figure painting is drawn.
