A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Sender(Excerpts)

This is a report of an E-C translation of The Sender(Kevin Elko and Bill Beausay’s novel),which tells a story of Charlie Cristo,an American football coach who is diagnosed with cancer.He receives anonymous letters from a “sender” everyday.Through personal experiences or stories,“the sender” encourages Charlie not to give up.He gradually becomes optimistic,while the team he coaches also achieves remarkable results.The Adaptation Theory serves as the guidance for this translation practice,with Chapter 11 to17 of The Sender being selected as the translation material.Proper translation strategies are used to translate the original work,so that the target readers can have a deeper understanding of the book.This report applies Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory framework to explore English-Chinese translation strategies for epistolary novels.Based on the framework,this report explores translation strategies for two dimensions.Regarding contextual adaptability of correlation,the author follows communicative and linguistic contexts to achieve contextual adaptability.For structural elements of adaptability,translation strategies consider lexical and syntactic aspects to achieve structural adaptability.This report provides a comprehensive analysis of Chinese translation practice,and proposes specific translation strategies,aiming to provide references for the translation of epistolary novels.
