A Study Of Space Aesthetics In Jia Zhangke’s Films

As the most unique director of the sixth generation,Jia Zhangke has gradually moved from the fringe to the mainstream and from home to the world in the past 20 years of directing career.Jia Zhangke’s personal growth experience resonates with the Chinese society in the transition period.He uses images to transform individual memories into accepted public emotions,which are expressed through the "flat" narrative mechanism and the loose and alienated background of the story.Jia Zhangke abandoned the traditional linear narrative,causal relationship and closed structure,and used fragmented plots,loose characters and flat narrative structure to make the space of the story closer,and showed the natural survival of characters in the way of spatial narrative.It can be said that space plays a crucial role in Jia Zhangke’s film narration.Based on the theory of space aesthetics,this paper takes the construction of space aesthetics in Jia Zhangke’s films as the text,and studies the ideographic connotation,aesthetic factors and social value contained in Jia Zhangke’s image space from the three spatial dimensions of aesthetic space,social space and imagination space.The first part of the article mainly explains the theory of space aesthetics and how to construct the space picture in the film and the foundation of Jia Zhangke’s film space aesthetics construction;The second part,from the perspective of space aesthetics,focuses on the analysis of social production,character status and discourse logic of small and medium-sized counties and big cities in Jia Zhangke’s films.The third part mainly starts from the Angle of imagination space,mainly analyzes the release of public space as aesthetic consciousness and the virtual space bearing the author’s anxiety.This paper aims to explore the cultural function of space aesthetics in image narration by analyzing the space aesthetics in Jia Zhangke’s films,so as to understand its unique aesthetic value.
