The translation material selected for this translation practice is the chapter of“The Legend of the White Snake” in the book Charm of Opera: Collection of Guangxi Wenchang Opera(abbreviated as “ Charm of Guangxi Wenchang Opera”)by He Hongyu,Jiang Yanzhong,and Su Junmin.The Charm of Guangxi Wenchang Opera is presented to readers in the form of a Guangxi Wenchang Opera,compiling numerous classic works.Guangxi Wenchang has been integrated with the dialect of northern Guangxi in the historical changes,and was listed as the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative list in 2008.This translation report is guided by the theory of functional equivalence and consists of five parts: introduction,process description,theoretical framework,case study,and conclusion.The case study mainly explores how to use functional equivalence theory to solve translation difficulties from the perspectives of lexical level,syntactic level,textual level,and stylistic level.The lexical level mainly involves the processing of proper nouns and culture-loaded words to convey the cultural connotation of the source text to the target language readers;at the syntactic level,translation methods such as omission and free translation are mainly used to make the language more in line with the reading habits of the target language readers;the textual level mainly aims to achieve semantic equivalence between the translated text and the source text by connecting contextual context and cultural context;the stylistic level is mainly to achieve better translation effects by maintaining the stylistic style of the source text in the translation.The final part is a conclusion of the report author’s translation practice.The use of this type of text as translation material by the report author not only responds to the call for protecting intangible cultural heritage by the country,but also helps to protect and pass on the Guangxi Wenchang.The report author hopes that this translation report will provide some reference value for future translation work on Guangxi Wenchang.
