With the media shift and the background setting of the image age,the narrative strategy and visual characteristics of figurative expression painting are undergoing a profound change since the beginning of the 21 st century.The way people obtain information and the construction of knowledge system gradually transition from "reading" printed texts to "watching" image resources of social media.However,the convenience of technology makes everyone a creator and disseminator of images.The image resources that come into view every day are diverse and varied,and they form a huge and fragmented picture in the minds of viewers.The increasingly fragmented viewing also makes the artist abandon the grand narrative in the past,and instead expresses the artist’s presence in the era with a fragmented narrative logic.Based on the above,this article cites three representative painters,Neo Rauch,Lars Elling and Adrian Ghenie,and uses their paintings as examples to study the development of representational painting narrative logic and visual representationsince the beginning of the 21 st century.This article is divided into four chapters,respectively discussing the narrative form structure,image narrative,representational painting and the author’s practical application.In the first chapter,the elements required for narrative are listed,and the advantages of text narrative and image narrative are compared.The second chapter describes the background characteristics of the image era and the image "turn",and explains the generation logic of image narration.The third chapter,as the main chapter of the thesis,first discusses what is figurative expression painting,then compares the painters of the image era represented by Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter,and finally studies the narrative strategy and visual feature of figurative expression painting since the beginning of the 21 st century.The fourth chapter is the author’s absorption and transformation of the above-mentioned narrative strategies and visual features.
