The Syntactic And Semantic Study Of The Expanded "V-Adv/Adj-O" Of Separable Words

As a special class of words involved both lexical and syntactic levels,Separable Words have always been the focus of academic attention and research.In the existing studies,Descriptive theory focuses on the description of the structure and grammatical features of Separable Words,while Generative theory focuses on the explanation of the restrictive mechanism behind the phenomenon of Separable Words.However,there are still disputes about the distinction between Separable Words and words,phrases,and the formation mechanism of Separable Words.The key problem of Separable Words lies in the relationship between its own particularity and “Atomicity of Words” or “Principle of Lexical Integrity”,therefore,the focus of the study is to solve the problem of when the components of Separable Words can be separated?How does the insertion get into the interior of Separable Words? Is it in L-Syntax layer,S-syntax layer or syntactic interface layer? What are the components of movement… and so on.In view of the above problems,this paper based on previous studies,analyzes the syntactic mechanism of the expanded “V-Adv/Adj-O” of Separable Words from the perspective of syntax and semantics.First,This paper collects and sorts out the “V-Adv/Adj-O” linguistic phenomenon in modern Chinese,and classifies the “VO” Separable Words according to modern Chinese dictionary and modern Chinese Separable Words usage dictionary,so as to clarify the research scope.Secondly,on the premise that “ VO” is a Separable Words,this paper analyzes the syntax and semantics features of “V”,“O” and the relationship between “V” and “O” before degree adverbs,scope adverbs,presupposed negative adverbs and adjectives enter into “VO”.After the formation of“V-Adv/Adj-O”structure,it is more inclined to limit the scope of “O” when the inserted elements act as adverbials or complements or to emphasize its degree,making the object exclusive.Thirdly,using the theory of Feature Checking,Phase theory and the universal hierarchical of adverbs,this paper analyzes the formation process of the expanded “V-Adv/Adj-O” of Separable Words.It is concluded that the Separable Words “VO” is selected by a functional component(“X”),and its category and separable features are determined by “X”.The combination of “Adv/Adj” and“VO” stimulates the separable features of “X”,resulting in “V” and “O” appearing in different syntactic terminals.“X” is used as a probe to find the matching target for feature checking.Adjectives and adverbial components have focus features,which are move and adjunct to the position of [spec,XP] to complete the checking,the“V-Adv/Adj-O” structure is formed.Finally,The syntactic features and mechanisms of “V-Adv/Adj-O” structure formed when “VO” is a Separable Words and phrase are compared,and similarities and differences between them are summarized,Thus providing a reference for the distinction of Separable Words and phrases.
