This is an E-C translation practice report, and its source text is selected from the first section of Social Skills Guidebook. In this part, the author gives a professional explanation and analysis of the main mental barriers to socializing, aiming to help people manage anxiety and see problems in social life in a reasonable way.It also provides individuals with some practical social skills to socialize without losing themselves,so as to help them establish closer relationships with others, and achieve a more satisfactory social life.At present, there is no Chinese translation of this book. This part of the text is mainly informative, supplemented by expressive text. When translating, the translator should not only pay attention to the transmission of the information, but also pay attention to the readability of the translation and the acceptance of the readers.Guided by Newmark’s communicative and semantic translation, the translator analyzes the translation in detail from three aspects: the lexical level, the syntactic level and the discoursal level. At the lexical level, the translator mainly deals with the phenomenon of flexible use of parts of speech in the source text and the familiar words with obscure meanings through extending the meaning of words and conversion of word class. At the syntactic level, the translator mainly deals with the different habits of using subjects, the impersonal and personal style and long and difficult sentences through adjustment of word order, change of the inanimate subject and division of long sentences. At the discoursal level, the translator mainly uses echo of conjunction words and restoring of writing style, which can enhance the readability of the translation while retaining the characteristics of the source language.Through this translation practice, the translator finds that Newmark’s communicative and semantic translation have strong guiding significance for the translation of social psychological texts.Semantic translation respects the source text, strives to express the exact semantics of the source text,it can ensure the quality of the translation.Communicative translation,on the other hand, emphasizes that the translated text should conform to the expression habits of the target language, which can promote cultural transmission. The translator hopes that this report can provide some reference for the translation research of this type of text and enrich the research of communicative and semantic translation in practical applications.
