Due to the intervention of artificial intelligence, contemporary art cannot merely satisfy the visual effect of the picture. The spiritual emotion of the artist behind the work of art and the thinking of the world is the essence of art creation. When the way of reproducing real things is not enough to express the artist’s feelings and thoughts, symbolic meaning becomes an indispensable means of expression in painting.Mark Chagall devoted his life to painting, with a career spanning 80 years, during which he condensed the things that touched him deeply in each experience into a unique image language. We can often see the elements that appear repeatedly in his paintings, and the symbolic meaning behind these images can help us understand the spiritual connotation of Chagall’s painting. This article starts from the topic of symbolic meaning in Chagall’s painting, and expounds the formation, specific expression and influence of Chagall’s symbolic meaning. The following conclusions are drawn:(1)The formation of symbolic meaning in images requires the painter to be sufficiently sensitive to the surrounding things, and to form a systematic picture language based on the combination of real objects and his own special experiences;(2)According to his own interests and abilities, after a long time of imitation and experimentation, and the integration of his own understanding, the image can be in line with the creation technique,so that the symbolic meaning of the image can be naturally presented in the picture;(3)As a symbol of art,we need to express our own thinking about the world, and contribute our own opinions and views to the topics that are common and relatively eternal to mankind.Based on the above conclusions,we hope to form a systematic painting language and help those who have the same confusion as the author.
