In the history of art development, women’s art has always existed, and gender symbols have been a common theme in the works of female artists. The different eras and personal experiences of female artists result in diverse meanings of gender symbols in their artworks. These "gender symbols" belong to the realm of symbols and are a type of symbol that emerges and primarily interprets gender. The foundation of gender symbols lies in the differentiation between male and female gender and their associated qualities. This article begins by examining the differences between feminist art and women’s art,and explores the emergence of women’s art and the influence of feminism on women’s art.By clarifying the concept of women’s art,it also demonstrates the promoting role of feminism in women’s art.Based on this foundation, the article analyzes the manifestations of gender symbols in women’s art from two perspectives: direct presentation and indirect presentation. It uses various female artists from different eras as examples to showcase the creative intentions behind artworks containing gender symbols and criticizes the excessive interpretation of gender symbols in women’s art from a feminist perspective. The article takes Yayoi Kusama as a case study, explaining her choice of male reproductive organs as symbols for artistic creation by examining her family environment and the historical context. It also analyzes the influence of avant-garde movements in the United States at that time, such as sexual liberation and feminism,on Kusama’s artistic creation.Through the analysis of Kusama’s performance art and installation artworks, the article clarifies the meaning of gender symbols in her works.
