Nowadays, more and more attention has been paid to the cultivation of the English writing ability of senior high school students with the new round educational reform in our country. The necessity of the continuous study of it is still imperative since there still exist some problems and challenges in senior high school students’ English writing, such as unglamorous language style, plain language expressions and so on.The concept of grammatical metaphor was initially brought out by Halliday in 1985,which was universally acknowledged as the advanced level of language acquisition, thus comprehending and applying it proficiently is extremely important in improving learners’ English proficiency. The concept of grammatical metaphor was widely implemented in studies of foreign language teaching, such as vocabulary, writing, reading and translation teaching. This study, therefore, based on the theory of grammatical metaphor on Systemic Functional Linguistic, aims at finding out the relationship between Senior One students’ grammatical metaphor ability and their English writing ability,in which literature review, tests and interview were harnessed. The research questions then are to investigate the relationship between students’ grammatical metaphor ability and the degree of complexity, coherence and confidence of their English writing. The results show that: 1)there is a strong and positive relationship between Senior One students’ grammatical metaphor ability and the degree of complexity of their English writing, which means students who own higher grammatical metaphor ability will have a higher tendency or ability to use complicated expressions and sentences in their English compositions;2)there is a strong and positive relationship between Senior One students’ grammatical metaphor ability and the degree of coherence of their English writing, which means students who own higher grammatical metaphor ability will have a higher tendency or ability to use more coherent devices in their English compositions to make it more fluent and coherent;3)there is a strong and positive relationship between Senior One students’ grammatical metaphor ability and the degree of confidence of their English writing, which indicates students who own higher grammatical metaphor ability will behave more positive and confident toward their English writing. This study not only enables us to further understand the impact of grammatical metaphor in Senior One students’ English writing but also has a certain referential value on optimizing the methods and strategies of applying grammatical metaphor in senior high school in the future.
