Song Shengyu’s Painting Style And Its Influence

Song Shengyu(1910-1966)was an important painter in the modern Fujian painting world,and his achievements in painting birds and flowers were the highest.He inherited the traditional flower and bird paintings of Fujian and absorbed the essence of Lingnan School to form his own style.Throughout his life,Song has devoted himself to art education and cultivated a large number of talents in Fujian for painting birds and flowers,making outstanding contributions to the development of art in Fujian.This paper combines Song’s life background,social activities,and artistic creation and teaching career in the 20 th century.It focuses on the formation of Song’s artistic concepts and painting style and his teaching achievements,and compares the artistic heritage and artistic breakthroughs and innovations of later generations of painters under Song’s training or influence.The thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter 1 analyzes the three stages and causes of the formation of Song Shengyu’s style of flower and bird painting.The early period(1915-1924)was influenced by local art and family studies,mainly analyzing the influence of the Shanghang culture and his father on the formation of Song’s painting style.The middle period(1925-1947)by the Lingnan school of painting,Zhang Shuqi and Bada Shanren and other influences on the style of painting transformation.In the late period,Song gradually formed his own symbolic language and entered the mature period of style formation(1948-1966).The second chapter analyzes the stylistic characteristics of Song Shengyu’s flower and bird painting from the characteristics of brush and ink techniques,composition features,and aesthetics.The third chapter elaborates Song Shengyu’s teaching achievements during his ten years of teaching at the Teachers’ College,mainly analyzing the inheritance and innovation of Song Shengyu’s painting style by his students Zeng Xianmou,Lin Jinding,Wu Tongsen,Song Zhansheng,Xie Congrong,Xu Jinbao,Ke Tongzhi and others.The regional influence of Song Shengyu’s flower and bird painting art and its inspiration to Fujian flower and bird painting art are summarized.
