Hope is a crucial psychological resource, influencing individuals’ academic performance, work, social interactions, creativity, and motivation for action. It holds significant importance for psychological well-being and social development.Although China possesses a vast cultural heritage and historical background on hope, the study of hope in psychology remains inadequate. The existing research on hope primarily focuses on descriptive surveys, with limited progress in developing systematic interventions and methods for enhancing hope.Subjective well-being refers to an individual’s positive psychological experiences concerning their life, including daily positive and negative emotions,as well as life satisfaction. It is an essential research topic in the field of positive psychology.Previous studies have indicated a link between hope and subjective well-being,but further exploration of their relationship is needed. In the past, research on Chinese youth has mainly focused on their physical and mental health issues, with little exploration from the perspective of positive psychology on how to improve their mental health by cultivating their positive psychological qualities. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between hope and subjective wellbeing among rural middle school students.Based on Snyder’s hope theory,a short-term summer camp program will be developed and implemented to analyze its effectiveness and identify effective measures to enhance hope among rural middle school students. This study comprises two sub-studies.The first study explores the relationship between hope and subjective well-being among rural middle school students using convenience sampling.A total of 162 rural middle school students were surveyed using a questionnaire to investigate the correlation between hope and subjective well-being;while 140 of these students were further subjected to a six-day daily experience method to examine the daily relationship between hope and subjective well-being.The second study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a self-developed summer camp program on the hope and subjective well-being of 135 rural middle school students using a randomized controlled trial design.Based on the perspective of positive psychology and Snyder’s hope theory,we developed this short-term intensive intervention plan by referring to hope intervention programs from both domestic and international sources. This summer camp consists of six major modules, including group psychological counseling, dance and movement group, arts, music, outdoor sports, and science.Using survey methodology to track intervention effects. The conclusions of this study are as follows:1.There is a significant positive correlation between hope and subjective wellbeing. The individual’s hope has a predictive effect on their subjective well-being.Daily hope can positively predict an individual’s daily positive emotions and life satisfaction, and negatively predict their daily negative emotions.Hope on one day can positively predict an individual’s positive emotions and life satisfaction on the following day,and negatively predict their negative emotions on the following day.Conversely, individual’s positive emotions and life satisfaction on one day can positively predict hope on the following day, while negative emotions on one day can negatively predict individual’s hope on the following day.2.The short-term summer camp program designed in this study with the aim of improving hope was found to be an effective intervention that significantly enhances hope and subjective well-being among rural middle school students. In comparison to rural middle school students who did not attend the summer camp, students who received the short-term summer camp intervention showed significant improvements in hope, positive emotions, and life satisfaction,as well as significant decreases in negative emotions.3.The follow-up data three months after the intervention showed a rebound trend in various variables, but the level of hope among middle school students who participated in the short-term summer camp intervention remained significantly higher than those who did not participate. This suggests that the short-term,intensive summer camp intervention based on positive psychology had a relatively stable and long-lasting effect on the hope of rural middle school students.
