Teaching Chinese characters is always a focus of international Chinese language teaching and a key to its success.However,effective teaching programs for Chinese characters are lacking.This thesis attempts to systematically apply Chinese character explanations and authentic tasks in teaching Chinese characters.It draws on the 3P teaching method and task teaching method,which are widely used in speaking,listening,and integrated classes to design an online method for teaching Chinese characters to non-Chinese learners at an elementary level.The study conducts two rounds of experiments with two groups of beginner-level Moroccan and South African subjects and analyzes the experimental results using two questionnaires.The study evaluates and summarizes the effectiveness of the implementation of these methods and proposes suggestions for improvement and pedagogical recommendations to explore their effectiveness in teaching Chinese characters to learners of different levels.The study finds that the integration of real tasks into Chinese character teaching can increase students’ interest and confidence in learning Chinese characters and reduce their fear of learning.The 3P method is suitable for beginner-level learners with weak foundation and conservative learning style.On the other hand,the task-based method is suitable for beginner-level learners who have a good foundation in Chinese characters and are willing to take risks and try to make mistakes.The study finds that integrating real tasks into Chinese character teaching can increase students’ interest and confidence in learning Chinese characters and reduce their fear of learning them.The 3P method is suitable for beginner-level learners with weak foundations and conservative learning styles,while the task-based method is suitable for beginner-level learners who have a good foundation in Chinese characters and are willing to take risks of making mistakes.
