| Based on the engagement system of appraisal theory and the research methods of the corpus, the engagement resources in the self-built corpora of the diplomatic discourse of China and the UK are annotated in this thesis.A quantitative and qualitative analysis is conducted to study the interpersonal meanings in the diplomatic discourse of the two countries and then characterize their diplomatic image. Finally, from the perspective of political factors and ideology, this thesis explains the reasons why the two countries have similarities and differences in the use of engagement resources. The statistical results of various engagement resources show that the English translation corpus of the diplomatic discourse of China contains more heterogloss than that of the UK.Both countries tend to use expansion resources rather than contraction resources, but China uses more expansion ones.Specifically,China uses more deny resources than the UK does, but the ratio of entertain resources to attribute resources in the two corpora is close. The analysis of various engagement resources demonstrates that both countries use the interpersonal meanings of the engagement resources to convey their own diplomatic attitudes. On the whole, the Chinese government presents a peaceful and dignified diplomatic image. The political factor is that China needs to better maintain its own governance, and the ideological factor is that the Chinese tend to express their views implicitly and politely, but they will also forcefully refute queries from the outside. |
