As the incidence of cancer increases every year,people’s attitudes toward cancer have changed from fear to reason.Cancer science interviews provide credible scientific expertise to the public and have a certain social communication value.Translators play an important role in the dissemination of knowledge as a bridge of communication.This E-C consecutive interpreting activity is based on the online interview “Rebel Cells: Cancer,Evolution and the Science of Life” by cancer researcher Kat Arney on Google.Guided by Gile’s Effort Model,this report attempts to explore the following issues: characteristics of the medical science interview corpus;factors influencing translators’ energy allocation during simulated consecutive interpreting;and countermeasures.The report found that high information density,unfamiliar vocabulary,inappropriate use of notes,and syntactic differences between Chinese and English were the main factors leading to an imbalance in energy allocation,which affected translators’ logic and fluency in the output sentence.Summarizing key information,improving long-term memory,intensive note-taking training,and using translation techniques can effectively improve the energy imbalance in medical science interview interpretation.Gile’s Effort Model can help translators analyze the energy imbalance in the consecutive interpreting process in a gradual and targeted manner.This report discusses the appropriate countermeasures for the problems,taking into account the characteristics of medical science interviews,in order to achieve the goal of making the interpretation more coherent and natural on the basis of ensuring the accuracy of the translation,which has certain implications for the practice of the same type of consecutive interpreting. |
