| This is a Chinese-English translation practice report.The source text comes from the book A Glance of Liuzhou which aims to introduce Liuzhou and is helpful for readers to understand the city’s history and culture,tourist attractions,economic development,folk customs and other basic conditions.The content translated by the translator is the first chapter of the book(The History of Liuzhou),which introduces the historical development of Liuzhou in chronological order,depicts many wonderful pictures of historical events,depicts many famous historical figures,and shows the readers the profound historical background and cultural heritage of Liuzhou.The translator explores the translation strategies and methods of publicity materials through this translation practice,and hopes that this translation practice will provide an effective English text for Liuzhou’s publicity,help deepen foreigners’ understanding of the city,and spread the city’s culture and Chinese culture.Guided by Newmark’s Text Typology and communicative translation,this report,from the perspective of publicity,combines examples to find different translation strategies and methods,and transmits useful information about Liuzhou and Chinese culture to the target language readers.The report is divided into four parts.The first part is the practical task description,including the task background and significance.The second part is the translation process,which includes pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The third part is the case analysis,which analyzes the text at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels,the translator has classified the cases,and found the corresponding translation methods.The fourth part is the summary and limitation of translation practice.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained more understanding of translation methods.For the translation strategies and methods,firstly,at the lexical level,the translator has adopted the strategies like literal translation and transliteration plus the explanation to translate Chinese culturalloaded words and proper nouns,and for the translation of four-character expressions,strategies including literal translation and free translation have been adopted with their parts of speech and sentence components transformed and changed;secondly,at the syntactical level,after intra-lingual translation,free translation,and explicitation can be applied to translate poetry and classical Chinese in the inter-lingual translation;at last,at the textual level,the coherence in the text can be explicit or implicit,and the translator has adopted appropriate cohesive devices like addition,restructure and grammatical cohesion based on the differences between Chinese and English,to provide a publicity translation with a high acceptance by the target language readers. |
