| Italian dramatist Pirandello has great influence in the history of modern drama. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934,and is praised as "enough to keep pace with Ibsen and Chekov, and is one of the masters of modern world literature." It is precisely because Pirandello’s plays describe the real life and tragic situation of a large number of modern people, and his plays reveal a strong sense of tragedy.Pirandello’s dramatic works are worthy of in-depth study. However, most of the research results of domestic are only limited to the research level of Pirandello’s "play in play" and grotesque style, and fail to jump out of the existing research framework to examine Pirandello’s dramatic works from a new perspective. This paper attempts to break away from traditional research concepts and explore the tragedy and potential causes of tragedy contained in Pirandello’s plays from the perspective of drama itself. The full text is divided into three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction part mainly combs and summarizes the research data of Pirandello at home and abroad; After that, the author will introduce the significance of this study; Finally, the basic ideas, methods and innovations of this study are described. The main text consists of three chapters:The first chapter is "The tragic conflict in Pirandello’s drama".From ancient times to the present, dramatic conflict,as a concentrated manifestation of drama, has been studied by drama theorists at all times and in all countries. In order to further explore the tragic conflicts in Pirandello’s dramas,This chapter mainly elaborates on three aspects of conflicts contained in Pi’s plays, namely conflicts between people and society, conflicts between characters, and conflicts within individuals. The second chapter is "tragic characters in Pirandello’s plays".Pirandello is good at portraying the characters in the drama, especially the "little people" in the society. He observes the social situation and real life through the characters in the survival dilemma, and takes this opportunity to explore the complex human nature. In addition,Pirandello also focused on portraying the alienated characters in modern society.Their common characteristic after being alienated is the loss of subjectivity. The third chapter is "tragic consciousness in Pirandello’s plays".The tragic consciousness of life includes the whole concept of life itself and the universe, and the whole philosophy that has almost been formatted and realized. In the field of literature, tragic consciousness should be understood from two characteristics of tragedy, one is the nature of tragic conflict, and the other is the emotional effect of tragedy. This chapter mainly analyzes the tragic consciousness in Pi’s dramas from the aspects of tragic outlook on life and the sublime beauty produced in Pi’s dramas. The conclusion part briefly summarizes the main idea of the full text. The author once again affirms the tragic value of Pirandello’s drama, and combs it from three aspects of conflict, character and consciousness, with the purpose of exploring the possibility of Pirandello’s drama value being further explored in the current era. |
