Conceptual Metaphors In The English-Chinese Translation Of Academic Texts

The text of this translation practice report is selected from the 2018 edition of the Oxford Handbook of Evolution,Biology and Society by Professor of Sociology,Rosemary L.Hopcroft.The Oxford Handbook of Evolution,Biology and Society examines various social phenomena from the perspectives of chemistry,biology and sociology.It contains 29 academic papers related to sociology,which is a typical academic text.The target readers of this text are those with some knowledge or interest in sociology.When translating this text,the writer finds that there are a lot of conceptual metaphors having different types and different functions in this text,which causes difficulties in translation.This report summarizes and analyses these conceptual metaphors,including ontological metaphors,orientational metaphors and structural metaphors with examples,explaining the corresponding translation methods and skills.Since the types of conceptual metaphors causes certain translation difficulties,the author tries to take into consideration the transmission of information and emotion in translation to meet the reading needs of the target language readers.In view of this,combined with the characteristics of the standard formal language of academic texts,the author reproduce the metaphorical and rhetorical effect of the original text,mainly using the translation methods of literal translation and free translation,combined with translation techniques such as conversion,extension and additional translation to strive for the translation principles of "faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance".Through the translation practice and the translation practice report,the author has improved his translation level and analytical ability,and also hopes to provide some refinement value for the translation of academic texts.
