President Xi Jinping frequently quotes classics in his speeches, forming a profound and timeless “Xi’s style” and showing the world China’s rich cultural heritage and profound history. In order to tell the Chinese story to the world, studies on the English translations of various political texts have gradually emerged in recent years. The translation of the classic sayings quoted by President Xi Jinping has naturally become a significant part of political translation studies.Based on the theory of Gestalt,Jiang Qiuxia’s visual Gestalt image method and Xie Hui’s auditory Gestalt image method are combined to analyze the translation methods and translation effects of various types of quotations of classics, namely Gestalt images in Xi Jinping: the Governance of China Volume Ⅲ in reconstructing the concepts of the original text, restoring visual beauty and “sound performance”.Efforts are also made to explore the translation strategies used by the translators to produce the aural aesthetic emotions and bodily kinesthesia during the sound performances. This paper intends to research on the following three questions.(1)How does the quotations in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Volume III distribute?(2)Are there any inclinations in the translators’ choice of translation methods and strategies in the process of translation practice based on the Gestalt image actualization theory?(3)What are the differences in the emphasis on the actualization of various types of Gestalt image? The main conclusions drawn from the analysis are as follows:(1)In Xi Jinping:The Governance of China Volume III there are three main types of gestalt images:Morality Gestalt image;Society Gestalt image;and Scenery Gestalt image(2)The most frequent translation method used by translators in the translation of the quotations of classics in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Volume III is liberal translation, accounting for 48.9%.In general translators prefer to adopt the translation strategy of domestication. For over 70% of Gestalt images with social and natural themes and those with the purpose of conveying political ideas with Chinese characteristics and building a friendly image of a big country, domestication strategy is applied.(3)Among the three types of Gestalt images, the translators were most cautious in dealing with society gestalt images. The reason is that expressions related to national policies and diplomatic issues are political and need to be handled carefully by translators.Gestalt image of morality tends to retain auditory aesthetic elements, such as antithesis and rhyme.Gestalt image of natural scenery,on the other hand, requires the translator to carefully examine whether the corresponding words in the translated language contain the same metaphorical meaning, and carefully decide whether to retain the metaphors in the original text.In terms of translation purpose, the actualization of the auditory and visual Gestalt images in the translation is undoubtedly successful. It has been found that translators have ensured that the political information is accurately conveyed while balancing the transmission of information with the reproduction of aesthetic elements. This study focuses on the reception of information, aesthetic experience, and the perception of political information in the translation process, which can inspire translators to give priority to the reproduction of political information in the process of political translation practice under the framework of Gestalt theory. In addition, the integration of psychological theory and political translation practice can be useful for the construction of a political translation discipline, and therefore this study has great research value.
